Berlin progressive-rock trio SEK have shared the video for “Die Schlacht Bei Lützen,” the second single from their debut album Wallensteins Garage, due October 30 through Exile On Mainstream Records. The track draws on the Battle of Lützen and the historical figure of Albrecht von Wallenstein, turning battlefield chaos into a long-form instrumental composition.
History recast as psychedelic rock
SEK is guitarist Paul-Willy Stoyan (Gavial), drummer Georg Edert (Elder, Gaffa Ghandi) and bassist Lucas Kazzer (Gaffa Ghandi). After two self-released cassette projects, the trio are preparing a full-length record that uses the Thirty Years’ War as the backdrop for an experimental rock narrative.
“Die Schlacht Bei Lützen” starts with a rhythmic motif before moving through slower passages and increasingly disordered sections intended to represent the battle’s destruction and aftermath. The band’s accompanying video, edited by Stoyan, transforms footage from a 1978 German Wallenstein documentary through mirroring, distortion and repeated images.
‘Wallensteins Garage’ arrives October 30
Recorded and mixed by Fabien de Menou, the album draws from krautrock, heavy psychedelia, progressive rock and improvisation. The band say their interest lies not only in the events of the battle but in the absurdity and aftermath of war.
The “Die Schlacht Bei Lützen” video premiered through Everything Is Noise ahead of the album’s October release.
