Indonesia’s Ensemble Tikoro have unveiled the video for “Throat,” a piece that combines extreme-metal vocal techniques, traditional throat singing and percussion. The new video premiered through New Noise Magazine ahead of the group’s Tortoise album, due October 23, 2026, on Jangjang Records.
Heavy music made with voices
Founded by Robi Rusdiana in 2012, the Bandung-based ensemble approaches heavy music without the conventional guitar-and-drum lineup. Instead, the group draws on extended vocal techniques associated with extreme metal, Sundanese musical traditions, singing bowls, ritual percussion and contemporary composition.
“Throat” interprets the throat chakra, with voices inspired in part by Denawa characters from the Sundanese Wayang Golek puppetry tradition. Rusdiana says the piece moves through 5/8 time and freer meters, with changing dynamics intended to explore a wide range of vocal expressions.
The video features Indonesian pantomime artist Wanggi Hoed, whose movement gives the piece a visual counterpart without prescribing a single interpretation.
‘Tortoise’ due October 23
The album documents the second and third parts of the group’s larger Tortoise performance; Part 1 is reserved for live presentations. The record will be available digitally and on cassette. Ensemble Tikoro also released Hell Chamber in 2024 and have worked across dance, theater and experimental music.
