PROTEST THE HERO’s RODY WALKER: I’m the Last Person to Trust About My Own Songs — Rocking With Jam Man

Rocking With Jam Man interviewed Rody Walker of Protest the Hero on October 23, 2026, for a fast-moving, 15-minute conversation that went well beyond the standard album questions. Rody talked about the strangest rumor surrounding his band, the hit songs he initially disliked, a surprising encounter with Asking Alexandria, the night fans helped save his career, and the incredible answer he gave to Jam Man’s famous death-row meal question.

Rody Walker says his own taste can’t be trusted

When Jam Man challenged Rody about nearly discouraging the band from releasing “Mouthpiece” first, the singer was quick to laugh at his own judgment. “I am the last person anyone should listen to,” he said. Walker recalled believing “Animal Bones” from Volition would go unnoticed, only for audiences to gravitate toward it. He joked that he has the same luck picking merchandise: if he personally likes a shirt design, nobody will buy it.

Protest the Hero and the unlikely Asking Alexandria connection

Asked whether an unexpected artist had ever credited Protest the Hero as an influence, Walker recalled meeting a friendly member of Asking Alexandria at Australia’s Soundwave festival. He and a bandmate went to see the group play, then found themselves scratching their heads at the musical connection. It wasn’t criticism of the band: he simply couldn’t hear the overlap in styles.

Palimpsest, Within and the changing perspective of a songwriter

Walker acknowledged that Protest the Hero could have done more to promote Palimpsest, although releasing an album amid the upheaval of COVID-19 posed real problems. The newer album, Within, released July 17, 2026, gave Rody a chance to get more personal. He explained how an interviewer had pointed out an emotional contrast between the old and new records that he hadn’t consciously planned.

Would a billion dollars change his mind about anniversary tours?

Jam Man didn’t let Walker off easily on the subject of nostalgia. If he were offered a billion dollars to perform Kezia again decades from now, would he abandon his stance against repetitive anniversary tours? Walker laughed and admitted he wasn’t above a paycheck. More seriously, he said that after years of celebrating old albums he would rather perform a mixture of songs that he and the audience really enjoy.

The night the audience brought him back

The interview turned emotional when Rody described losing his voice onstage and hearing a crowd sing in his place. He said what had been a devastating moment became a beautiful memory. Having briefly considered giving up performing, he found himself thinking he had to figure out how to continue. That answer is one of the strongest moments in the conversation.

Rock singer, fitness coach, and baseball dad

Walker’s life doesn’t revolve solely around Protest the Hero. He runs a fitness-coaching business and coaches his son’s baseball team. He laughed about wearing the baseball team’s jersey onstage in Europe and getting a Czech crowd to chant “Go Rangers” — only to discover that the kids he coached were thoroughly unimpressed.

The wildest death-row meal answer yet?

Jam Man’s customary final-meal question sent the interview in an unexpected direction. Walker declared he would devour an entire cake and a mountain of full-lactose dairy products, despite having avoided lactose for years. His rather graphic prediction of what would happen afterward is best heard directly in the interview.

Rody Walker praises Jam Man’s research

At the end of the conversation, Walker volunteered: “This was a really great interview. You did a lot of great research and you asked a lot of fun questions.” It was a fitting end to a conversation filled with honest stories, laughs, and a few moments of real vulnerability.
