Prairie Prince of The Tubes Joins Rocking With Jam Man for an Exclusive Full Interview

Prairie Prince has spent more than five decades behind the drums with The Tubes and Todd Rundgren, but there’s a lot more to his story than music. He’s a painter, a stage designer, a founding member of the early Journey lineup, and one of the artists who helped turn The Tubes into a band known for much more than just its songs.

Prairie joined Jam Man for a full-length conversation on Rocking With Jam Man. This is the complete interview, not a collection of highlights.

From The Tubes to Todd Rundgren and Journey

Prairie’s story goes all the way back to the early days of The Tubes in San Francisco. The group built a reputation for wild theatrical performances, pushing concert production far beyond the normal rock show. Today, Prairie continues to perform with The Tubes and Todd Rundgren.

Alongside the music, he’s worked extensively in painting and production design. His collaborations with Michael Cotten have spanned murals, album packaging, custom drum artwork, and large-scale concert productions.

Colours and Passions — Prairie’s First Solo Album

His 2026 debut solo album, Colours and Passions, took around ten years to finish and brings together 14 tracks and about 50 musicians. Inspired in part by Ken Nordine’s spoken-word album Colors, the record connects Prairie’s interest in music, storytelling, and visual art.
