Motörhead are marking four decades of Orgasmatron with a 40th-anniversary edition that lets fans hear the landmark 1986 record in two different ways. Alongside a remaster of the original Bill Laswell-produced album, longtime Motörhead producer Cameron Webb has created a new remix and remaster from the original multitrack recordings.
The announcement also brings a new video for the title track and expanded editions featuring previously unheard material from the era.
Two perspectives on a Motörhead classic
Orgasmatron captured the lineup of Lemmy, Phil Campbell, Würzel and drummer Pete Gill on songs including “Deaf Forever,” “Built for Speed,” “Doctor Rock” and the title track. The original album has been remastered for the anniversary, while Webb’s new version explores the instruments and performances within the original recordings rather than replacing Laswell’s mix.
According to the band’s team, Lemmy and Campbell had reservations about aspects of the original production. Webb, who produced six Motörhead studio albums, has said he wanted to bring out elements of the recording while preserving its character and respecting the work of Laswell and engineer Jason Corsaro.
Rehearsals, outtakes and a BBC session
The expanded anniversary package will arrive in deluxe 3LP bookpack and 2CD editions. Both the original remaster and Webb’s remix are joined by 1985 rehearsals and studio outtakes, plus the complete 1986 BBC Radio 1 Friday Rock Show session. A separate transparent-violet 1LP edition will feature the original studio album.
For listeners who know every note of the original, the expanded package offers a documented look at how those recordings sounded during rehearsals, on the radio and under two different production approaches.
