Indie-rock songwriter Louise Aubrie has found a fascinating new subject in Hollywood history. Her single “Harder To Say,” available since October 16, draws inspiration from Mabel Normand, the silent-film actress, director and producer whose extraordinary career came with an equally turbulent public life.
Recorded at EastWest Studios in Hollywood for Aubrie’s forthcoming album LFA, the track connects a London-to-Los Angeles creative journey with the stories of early cinema. The accompanying video pays tribute to the silent-film era, while the song is scheduled for a December 4 promotional push.
There is serious musical firepower behind the recording, too: guitarist Keith Scott, bassist Solomon Walker, drummer Charlie Paxson and keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning Jr., with production from Ken Sluiter and mastering by Dave Collins. It’s a cross-Atlantic rock release with a story worth digging into, not just another single announcement.

Louise Aubrie is a London-born, indie rock artist who splits her time between the UK and the US. Having started her career writing and recording in London, she then went on to hone her sound on the stages of downtown New York, building a transatlantic career defined by sharp songwriting and a punchy, guitar-driven edge.
Louise’s new single Harder To Say is taken from her forthcoming album LFA and was recorded at East West Studios in Hollywood. As Louise relocated to Los Angeles to write the album, it is steeped in Hollywood mythology and legends. Harder To Say is inspired by Mabel Normand, a leading silent film actress, director and screenwriter in the early 20th century.
Normand was a true trailblazer with her own studio and production company and starred with and directed Charlie Chaplin among many others. She had a colourful life, embroiled in scandals, and died tragically young, but above all she was a remarkably talented, funny, tenacious, amazing woman.
Lines such as ‘I can’t escape my fall from grace, it’s harder to say no tonight without an alibi’ reflect the turmoil of those around her and her downfall. The song builds to a crescendo reflecting how hard it was for Normand to say no to the bad influences she faced.
As Louise was living in the shadow of the Hollywood Hills, she felt the atmosphere of many legendary figures, including Normand’s fascinating story, and the accompanying video is filmed as a nod to the silent film era.
At its heart, LFA is a love letter from London to LA, shaped by the experience of relocating and absorbing the mythology of Hollywood. Driving through the city at all hours, inspired by the Hollywood Hills and the legacy of those who built the industry, the album captures that sense of being on the brink of change. The songwriter shares, “It’s always interesting when you have a life in both the UK and US as I find I am awake at all times of the day and night catching up with people, which can trick your brain into new areas of creativity.”
Across her career, Aubrie has worked with an impressive roster of musicians including Keith Scott, Solomon Walker, Charlie Paxson and Roger Joseph Manning Jr, and has performed at renowned venues such as The 100 Club in London and The Bowery Electric in New York. Her debut album Fingers Crossed…, produced by Boz Boorer, received critical acclaim in both the UK and US, earning national radio airplay and praise from Billboard. She has since secured airplay across BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, Kerrang and BBC Radio London, steadily building an international audience.
