John Bush has one of those careers where you can talk for half an hour and still have a hundred things left to ask. Armored Saint, Anthrax, the Metallica story, the rise of metal in the ’80s, and what happened when grunge changed the entire scene. I sat down with John for Rocking With Jam Man to get into all of it.
That Metallica decision
Before Metallica became one of the biggest bands in music, John Bush was approached about singing for them. He stayed with Armored Saint instead. It’s a choice people have been talking about for decades, and we get into that part of his history. When you know how massive Metallica eventually became, it’s hard not to wonder what might have happened. But there’s a whole story behind every road not taken.
Anthrax, the ’80s and the grunge takeover
Anthrax was already one of the biggest names in thrash when John joined in the early ’90s. He brought his own voice and feel to the band, and Sound of White Noise became one of the records that defined that era. We talk about how huge metal was in the 1980s, how quickly the industry changed once grunge arrived, and what it was like for the musicians who had to live through that shift rather than just watch it from the outside.
Metal is a community
One part of this conversation I really wanted to get into was the community behind heavy metal. A lot of these bands have known each other for decades. Fans keep showing up, bringing their kids to shows, talking about the old records and finding new favorites. Trends have come and gone, but that connection is still there. John has seen that scene from about every angle, and it’s something worth talking about.
Armored Saint still has plenty left to say
This isn’t just an interview about the past. Armored Saint released its ninth album, Emotion Factory Reset, on Metal Blade Records in May 2026, and the band continues to release music and tour. We also get into where John is now and what’s coming next. When somebody has done this for four decades and is still working, I’m not going to spend the whole conversation pretending it ended in 1993.
My take
I’ve always been more interested in the real stories than the same questions everybody asks. With John, there was a lot to get into: a huge opportunity with Metallica, a completely different chapter in Anthrax, and a band in Armored Saint that’s still doing things its own way. If you’re into Metallica, Anthrax, Armored Saint, or just metal history, check this one out and let me know what part stood out to you.
