Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart has released “The Way It Was Back Then,” the title track from his forthcoming solo album of the same name.
The 10-song record is now due October 30, 2026 via Bay Street Records. Stewart wrote, performed and produced the project, with longtime collaborator Jesse Samler contributing bass, drums, keyboards and programming.
According to Stewart, much of the album came together spontaneously, with vocals, lyrics and guitar ideas captured in the moment rather than fully written out beforehand. The record looks at memory, survival, love, loss, loyalty and the strange pull of the past without treating nostalgia as something purely comforting.
The title-track video was filmed around Soho, connecting the song to Stewart’s memories of the Marquee Club, Bar Italia and his early years in London.
The Way It Was Back Then follows Stewart’s Dave Does Dylan project and continues a career that includes Eurythmics, production and songwriting work with artists including Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin and many more.
