Actor Mark Pellegrino sits down with Rocking With Jam Man at Frightmare in the Falls to discuss playing Lucifer on Supernatural, Jacob on Lost and Paul Bennett on Dexter.
Why Lucifer was so charming
Mark explains that an effective villain needs to be compelling, interesting, and sometimes funny, crediting the writing and tone of Supernatural for shaping Lucifer’s charm. He also discusses the complicated response when audiences root for a character who is supposed to be evil.
Supernatural is a family drama
Even as the mythology expanded, Mark says his acting was grounded in relationships between parents, children and siblings. He viewed Lucifer through the experience of exclusion and rejection, rather than simply as a supernatural villain.
Lost never told him Jacob’s full story
Asked which production kept him most in the dark about his character, he immediately names Lost. He says the writers never fully explained Jacob’s story to him; he made assumptions from the vague direction he received.
Playing Paul Bennett on Dexter
Mark describes looking for the good a character wants to achieve, even when the methods are questionable. For Paul, that meant reforming his life and rebuilding his relationship with his family.
Why some fans fear Mark Pellegrino
He says some fans are afraid to approach him because they associate him with the frightening Lucifer character, although he is very different in person. Mark also explains why actors often have to work without knowing how a 23-episode season ends.
Death row meal
For Jam Man’s signature question, Mark picks filet mignon with sautéed mushrooms, mashed or loaded baked potatoes, and sautéed spinach.
