Vernon has spent years building music that lives between dark folk, post-rock, goth and doom. In this interview, she talks with Jam Man about the new chapter around Devotion, how her relationship with heavy music continues to evolve, and how The Keening now exists alongside a revived SubRosa.

The conversation also gets into the personal side of the record, creative independence, writing and arranging across multiple instruments, what it means to revisit older music from a different point in life, and where she wants to take both projects next.

About Devotion

Devotion is the second full-length from The Keening and arrives October 16 through Relapse Records. The record follows Little Bird and continues Rebecca Vernon’s blend of intimate, atmospheric songwriting with heavier, expansive passages.

The album includes “Devotion III – The King,” “A Little Bit of Blood,” “Time Travel,” “The Murder of Anna Brown” and the four-part Devotion sequence. Vernon has described “The King” as the heaviest track on the album and has indicated that The Keening may continue moving in a heavier direction.
